"Better than red wine or green tea? Yerba maté has been extolled as a healthful energy drink. Two studies, one of them conducted in 2004 at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and the other in 2005 by the Glycation, Oxidation and Disease Laboratory at Touro University in Vallejo, Calif., found some positive benefits."

"Yerba maté: The newest coffeehouse "it" drink may beat out java for health and energy benefits. Research shows that the compounds acts on the body in three ways. Like many stimulants, yerba maté suppresses appetite. It also increases metabolism, and lastly, it is thermogenic, which means that this herb encourages the body to burn calories. This effect was seen in subjects who took yerba maté extract in a 1999 University of Lausanne, Switzerland, study; the participants showed an increase in the amount of fat their bodies burned for energy."

"In the U.S. maté is the latest hipster energy tonic. It's marketed as coffee without the jitters, a potion the delivers health benefits ranging from better digestion to lower cholesterol. Recent studies seem to confirm the hype."
